A legal question may begin with a chatbot: What does this lease clause mean? What documents should I gather? Who can help with this contract?
AI can be a starting point for organizing those questions. The important distinction is what happens next: does a lawyer review your situation and agree to provide the help you need?
What's changing
Rocket Lawyer's October 14 announcement describes a Claude connector that lets users submit written questions or arrange attorney consultations. The service checks membership entitlements and can direct users to additional services when something is not included. This is a route to attorney access, not a promise that every request is covered.

LegalZoom's October 29 announcement describes an AI Assistant for business owners, with access to business information, products, and human specialists. Those are the provider's descriptions, not results from our hands-on testing.

Three different services
- AI assistance: A tool can summarize text, organize information, or suggest questions. Do not assume a lawyer has checked the output.
- Attorney information or an introductory consultation: A human lawyer may explain a topic or discuss options. Confirm whether the service includes recommendations tailored to your situation.
- Attorney advice or representation: Ask what the lawyer has agreed to handle, what it costs, and which responsibilities remain yours.
These categories can exist within the same platform. Rocket Lawyer's current comparison, for example, distinguishes written questions and live consultations from separately priced Legal Advice Sessions. Its FAQ also distinguishes legal information from personalized advice.

What this means for a prepaid plan
An AI feature may be useful without being the benefit that makes a subscription worthwhile.
If you need someone to review your actual lease, negotiate a settlement, prepare documents, or appear in court, confirm that exact task. “Contract review” could describe automated issue spotting, attorney review, or a separate paid engagement.
Compare the full cost of completing the work—not just access to the tool.
Before sharing documents
Do not assume a chatbot conversation has the same protections as a confidential conversation with your lawyer.
Before uploading sensitive material, ask who receives it, whether it is retained or used for model training, and which privacy terms apply to the AI platform and legal provider. If you already have counsel, ask how to share case documents securely.
The American Bar Association's AI guidance emphasizes lawyers' existing responsibilities concerning competence, confidentiality, communication, and fees. It is guidance about professional obligations, not a certification of any product.

Five questions before paying
- Is this response generated by AI, reviewed by a lawyer, or provided directly by a lawyer?
- Does my membership include the specific service, or is there another charge?
- Has a lawyer accepted my matter, and what will they handle?
- Who is responsible for filing, follow-up, and deadlines?
- How will my documents and conversation be stored and shared?
Your next step
Write down the task you need completed, then use our coverage checklist. Compare any remaining charges with a quote for the same work.
A convenient interface can help you reach assistance. It does not, by itself, establish coverage or representation. Do not let a pending AI response or service request delay attention to a legal deadline.
