When another route may fit better
One defined task: compare a direct quote
If you need one document reviewed or one consultation, compare the full subscription commitment with a quote for that exact task. Ask a local attorney whether limited-scope help is appropriate and available, what they handle, and what remains your responsibility. The Utah judiciary explains this option; local rules and practices differ.
Eligibility for free help: check legal aid or a clinic
For a civil issue, check the LSC legal-aid locator and state resources. Ask about income or other eligibility, issue and geographic limits, available help, and response time. A short advice clinic is not automatically ongoing representation. Court self-help staff may offer procedural information rather than attorney advice.
Disputed rights or broader work: compare representation
If negotiation, contested hearings, or a specialist are needed, compare an attorney engagement for that work with the plan's actual covered or discounted benefit. Neither a document package nor an introductory call establishes that a lawyer will handle the dispute.
A deadline or safety concern: seek timely qualified help
Do not let a new subscription, coverage question, or pending legal-aid application delay attention to a court deadline. Ask promptly about availability and who, if anyone, has agreed to act for you. Do not assume an application or inquiry extends time.
Compare the same task, end to end
Ask both options to price the same documents, advice, negotiation, appearances, and time period. Keep costs common to both routes in both totals.
Hypothetical example only: the same attorney task and case expenses| Cost | Plan route | Direct route |
| Future commitment | Plan route$30 × 12 payments = $360 | Direct route$450 fixed quote for the agreed work |
| Attorney work outside the benefit | Plan route$250 quoted additional work | Direct routeIncluded in this hypothetical $450 quote |
| Same uncovered case expenses | Plan route$90 | Direct route$90 |
| Total to complete the same work | Plan route$700 | Direct route$540 |
Here the direct route is $160 lower. Different real quotes could reverse the result. These are invented amounts, not provider prices, court fee schedules, or predicted savings. Do not count a covered task twice or treat an hourly retainer as a fixed completion price.
Use the cost calculator with your own remaining payments and extra costs. Past nonrefundable dues are not recovered by buying more coverage; usable existing benefits and unavoidable future obligations still matter.
Get a written scope before paying
For [task] in [state], please identify the work included, the work billed separately, and the expenses I pay. Will an attorney handle filing, negotiation, and appearances, or only advice/review? What limits and exclusions apply? Who handles the remaining steps, and can the attorney meet my deadline?
