Your employer may be a starting point
The ABA suggests checking whether a group legal-services plan is available as an employee benefit. Review your own benefit materials before buying a separate plan. Source: ABA.
Use your own quotes to compare the same work, including fees you still pay.
Calculator method and example assumptions reviewed October 9, 2026.
Compare equivalent work over the same period. Do not add expenses twice if they are already included in a quote.
The comparison assumes equivalent services. It does not measure attorney quality, likelihood of needing help, convenience, coverage certainty, or the value of other benefits. Confirm coverage before treating a quoted service as included.
Past nonrefundable dues are excluded. Refunds and unavoidable future commitments may affect your decision; apply them consistently to the routes where they belong. The inputs do not automatically model tax, fee waivers, or refunds.
Compare cancellable monthly payments with nonrefundable, full-year terms. Annual renewals are counted in full, including a partly used year.
Refunds, employer enrollment commitments, introductory rates, taxes, or price changes may alter the result. A monthly equivalent is not a monthly payment option.
Estimate a single hourly rate and the hours quoted for a defined task. A deposit credited toward the same bill is not a second fee.
Hours are an assumption, not a fixed completion price. Mixed rates, billing increments, and the engagement agreement can change the bill. An estimated excess is not a refund calculation. When representation ends, applicable state rules may require returning advance fees or expenses not earned or incurred. Request an accounting and check the agreement alongside those rules. State-rule example: Indiana Rule 1.16(d). ABA: legal fees and expenses.
Compare a fixed plan commitment with repeated, equivalent tasks. Each task must actually be eligible and available at the entered cost.
This is arithmetic, not a forecast of legal needs or a coverage decision. Task limits, different services, fees, and unused benefits can invalidate the scenario. Do not seek unnecessary legal work to recover past dues.
Our documented examples
Seven provider examples, three service models. These counts describe this site's comparison sample, not market share, provider quality, or the proportion of plans that cover your matter.
Service-scope sample checked October 10, 2026; LegalShield and US Legal Forms representation wording and resulting counts rechecked October 16, 2026. Not a price survey. LegalEASE uses the Illinois College employer example only. Each provider is counted once in each chart; the denominator is 7.
Service models are editorial groupings by the product compared, not legal classifications of every product a company sells. Representation groups summarize the wording in our chart: separate or discounted engagements, plan/schedule confirmation, or a forms subscription without attorney representation. None means guaranteed eligibility, availability, or payment of every expense.

| Rocket Lawyer | Documents / attorney tiers | Separate or discounted engagement described: Membership contacts do not establish court representation. | Pricing · Terms |
| LegalZoom | Personal membership / advisory | Separate or discounted engagement described: Further representation is not the consultation benefit. | Plan contract |

Link-status check: October 9, 2026. Counts describe access to URLs, not accuracy, coverage, or quality of legal help.
Research method and limitationsBlocked or timed-out sources still need follow-up. A working link does not certify its claims.
Compare the help you expect to need with the payments and alternatives available now. Past unused dues are not money that another renewal recovers.
Before the billing date: check the full renewal charge, notice deadline, cancellation method, covered tasks you reasonably expect, and a same-scope direct quote. Obtain written confirmation when cancelling. Read the provider billing comparison and your own contract.
