Forms and local filing
Missouri requires people representing themselves in family-law cases to complete its two-step Litigant Awareness Program and file the certificate. Choose forms for the responding spouse rather than the spouse starting the case. Check local requirements and remove confidential information as the court directs before filing. Legal aid and finding a lawyer
The Missouri Bar distinguishes its public lawyer directory, which helps confirm licensing and good standing, from LawyerSearch, which helps find lawyers accepting clients by location or practice area. It also links to Missouri Free Legal Answers for low-income residents with noncriminal questions. Confirm eligibility and agree separately on the scope and price of any representation. Before paying for a plan or service
Does my plan provide a Missouri attorney for the specific family matter, including preparation and appearances? If I only receive document review, who remains responsible for filing, service, and the other steps?
- Request the plan document that applies to your location and enrollment, not just a national benefits summary.
- Ask for a written answer about the specific matter, effective date, existing-matter rules, network attorneys, and service limits.
- Separate consultation, document preparation, attorney review, negotiation, and court representation. Ask exactly which tasks the quote includes.
Public court resources and legal-aid eligibility are not evidence that a commercial plan covers the same issue. Use the policy checklist and provider policy examples to organize questions.
Build a realistic budget
Missouri Courts lists GN10 as a request for cost relief supported by sworn income and expense information. A judge decides whether fees are waived. Ask the clerk which form applies, read the resulting order, and keep any attorney or subscription charges outside that order separate. Source: GN10 purpose and current form listing.
Compare future plan payments and uncovered expenses with a direct quote for the same work. Past nonrefundable dues are not savings you can recover by buying more coverage. The cost calculator and future payments and cancellation help separate those decisions.
Before filing or signing
Confirm the current instructions, deadlines, and local rules. If an issue involves safety, disputed rights, or a deadline, seek timely qualified help; do not wait for a new subscription to resolve a coverage question.
