New York traffic tickets & license help
Find the right forum before relying on a traffic benefit.
An eligible prepaid benefit may help you understand a ticket or arrange its defense. New York City moving tickets, local-court matters, and DMV license actions are not one process. Check the papers and the covered work before you pay or assume a lawyer is handling it.

Court and DMV sources checked October 15, 2026. This page focuses on traffic and license decisions; the criminal-charge section directs you to defense help, not a complete defense guide. State procedures do not establish plan coverage.

I just received a traffic ticket
Practical starting guidance, not a complete New York legal procedure.
What to do first
Keep the ticket and notices. Identify the issuing location, named court or agency, response date, and required appearance. Send the papers through an existing plan's approved intake channel and ask whether this exact violation qualifies.
Deadlines and urgent risks
Do not miss the response date while waiting for a benefit decision or for a ticket to appear online. Paying or entering a plea can have consequences beyond the fine. A driving course is not a substitute response.
First identify where the ticket belongs
- NYC Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB): non-criminal moving violations issued in the five boroughs.
- A local court elsewhere: follow the court named on the ticket. Do not copy TVB's online or hearing procedure into a different court.
- Parking, camera, or criminal allegations: these are not TVB matters. Check the authority identified on the notice; criminal driving charges need defense advice.

What to ask the plan lawyer
- Does the benefit include this offense, license class, and forum, or just an initial consultation? Tell the lawyer about commercial driving and any separate DMV notice.
- What would each available response mean for my case and record? Ask about possible additional DMV charges, not only the ticket's displayed fine.
- Who enters a response, prepares evidence, attends the hearing, and monitors dates? Get an accepted scope, including anything still left to you.
For example, a lawyer may explain how to contest a covered TVB ticket, but a referral alone does not schedule a hearing or establish that counsel will appear. Do not assume a negotiated outcome from a different local court is available here.
Defensive driving does not erase the ticket
New York's Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) can provide qualifying point-calculation and insurance benefits. It does not remove the conviction or points from the record, cancel an existing suspension, stop a scheduled hearing, or eliminate a Driver Responsibility Assessment. Insurance-company point systems are separate.
DMV: PIRP benefits and limits
Use the DMV-approved course directory to check providers, delivery methods, and fees. A course is a separate purchase, not proof that a plan's defense benefit has been used or that your ticket is resolved.
Sources checked October 15, 2026. This is not a recommendation to plead, contest, or buy a course.
Documents to gather
Every ticket and notice, license class and issuing state, any DMV action, relevant photos or records, and the plan's effective date and benefit terms. Give the lawyer a list of all related tickets, not just one.
Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.
If the ticket is not online yet
DMV warns that TVB tickets can take several days to enter its system. Lack of an email notification does not remove your responsibility to respond; contact TVB through its official guide if needed. For a non-TVB matter, contact the named court or agency instead.

Where prepaid help may fit
Does this exact ticket qualify, in this state, under my effective coverage? Is consultation or court defense included?
What it may not cover
Commercial driving, serious offenses, pre-existing tickets, out-of-state work, fines, court costs, and extra legal work need separate checks.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Will a plan bought after the ticket cover it?
Do not assume so. Ask about existing-ticket exclusions, effective dates, waiting periods, and state-specific terms. Advice, a discounted referral, and included defense are different services. Keep the response deadline while checking.
Does a covered lawyer mean I owe nothing else?
No. Separate attorney work from fines, surcharges, DMV assessments, course tuition, and any appeal or additional legal fee. No plan can promise dismissal, removal of every point, or unchanged insurance premiums.

My license may be suspended
Practical starting guidance, not a complete New York legal procedure.
What to do first
Read the notice and identify whether the issue is from a court, licensing agency, or both.
Deadlines and urgent risks
A licensing hearing and a criminal or traffic case may have separate deadlines. Do not assume paying a fine restores driving privileges.
Identify the action before trying to clear it
- Definite suspension: has a specified period, but passage of time alone may not satisfy all restoration requirements.
- Indefinite suspension: remains until the required action is taken. The reason may be an unanswered ticket, an assessment, insurance, or another issue.
- Revocation: cancels the license or privilege and usually involves DMV approval before a new license can be obtained. Paying a penalty is not itself restoration.
DMV: suspension, revocation, and restoration distinctions
Steps to take
- Read the reason, effective date, response instructions, and every open action on the notice. Ask DMV how to verify your current privilege.
- For a missed ticket response, identify TVB versus the local court. For another cause, use the authority and process specified on the order rather than sending money to an unrelated ticket portal.
- Ask the plan whether advice, a DMV proceeding, and any court work are each included. Confirm who has accepted responsibility for requests and deadlines.
What may happen next
You may need more than one clearance or a separate application. For example, resolving a ticket does not establish that another open license action is cleared. Obtain confirmation of your lawful driving status, not merely a payment receipt.
DMV: requesting restoration after revocation
Documents to gather
Complete DMV orders and envelopes, tickets, hearing papers, license class and issuing state, proof of compliance, and any plan response. Include all pending actions you know about.
Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.
Separate benefit and legal questions
A routine traffic-defense benefit may not include an administrative license case, a serious driving charge, or commercial driving. Ask about the specific service and lawyer expertise rather than relying on the word "traffic."
DMV sources checked October 15, 2026. This page does not calculate your deadlines or determine whether you may drive.
Where prepaid help may fit
Does the plan cover advice or representation for this licensing matter?
What it may not cover
Administrative hearings, serious driving cases, reinstatement fees, and required courses may not be covered.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Will paying the fine restore my license?
Not necessarily. The reason for the action controls, and another open suspension or revocation may remain. Follow the order and verify current status with DMV before driving.
Does ticket-defense coverage include DMV representation?
Not automatically. Ask about advice, hearing or application work, serious-offense exclusions, and extra fees. Get the accepted scope in writing; a referral does not establish that a deadline has been met.

I was arrested or charged
Practical starting guidance, not a complete New York legal procedure.
What to do first
Read the release conditions and next court date. Ask the court or counsel about representation and appointed-counsel eligibility.
Deadlines and urgent risks
Do not miss a hearing or assume a routine traffic benefit covers criminal defense. Avoid posting facts about the case online.
Find a defense lawyer, not just a ticket service
DWI and other misdemeanor or felony charges are not TVB ticket matters. Ask the criminal court about appointed-counsel eligibility if you cannot afford a defense lawyer. Do not assume that eligibility applies to an ordinary traffic infraction, or that a civil legal-aid application arranges criminal representation.
New York Courts: arraignment and the right to counsel
If you have a plan, ask whether this charge has any consultation, referral, or defense benefit. Confirm who represents you, which hearings are included, and fees. Do not delay defense help while considering a new subscription.
What may happen next
At arraignment the court addresses charges and rights, including counsel. Release conditions and later appearances need attention, and a separate DMV case may also exist. Tell defense counsel about work, license, or immigration concerns that may call for additional expertise.
New York Courts: stages of a criminal case
Documents to gather
Charging and release papers, hearing notices, existing orders, DMV notices, and counsel's contact details. Discuss case facts through counsel's appropriate private channel, not public posts or this site's search.
Scope of this section
This is a defense-help and plan-coverage route, not advice about pleas, evidence, or trial strategy. Follow the papers from the named court and obtain individual legal advice.
Court sources checked October 15, 2026.
Where prepaid help may fit
Does this exact charge have any benefit, and can the plan connect me with a qualified defense lawyer?
What it may not cover
Most general consultation promises do not establish criminal representation. Confirm exclusions and a separate written engagement if needed.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Is a plan's lawyer referral the same as a defense engagement?
No. Confirm that counsel has accepted your case, knows the next date, and has explained the scope and fees. General advice does not establish that someone will appear for you.
Will a lawyer appointed in a criminal case handle every DMV issue?
Ask counsel directly. Do not assume an engagement covers a separate administrative matter or license-restoration application. Identify each case and deadline so you know who is responsible.
Official contacts and more help
New York ticket, DMV, and defense resources
County or court details: Use the court named on your papers. Ask about local forms, filing, service, fees, response dates, and hearings. A statewide form may need local additions.
Find local civil legal aid. Eligibility, scope, and availability vary; applying does not establish representation or stop a deadline.
These agencies and directories serve different purposes. Court staff explain procedure, not individualized advice. Civil legal aid is not the usual source of criminal defense.
