California traffic tickets & license help
Check the ticket, the deadline, and the actual prepaid benefit.
An eligible traffic benefit may help you understand a ticket or obtain a lawyer for its defense. It does not automatically pay fines, protect your license, or cover a criminal charge. Start with the papers you received.

Court and DMV sources checked October 15, 2026. This page focuses on traffic and license decisions; the criminal-charge section directs you to defense help, not a complete defense guide. A state procedure is not a plan-coverage determination.

I just received a traffic ticket
Practical starting guidance, not a complete California legal procedure.
What to do first
Keep the citation and court notice. Identify the violation, court, response date, and any required appearance. If you have a plan, send the papers through its approved intake channel and ask whether this exact ticket qualifies.
Deadlines and urgent risks
Do not let a plan inquiry run past the court deadline. Paying, requesting financial relief, and contesting are not interchangeable choices. Check the consequences before selecting an option online.
Steps to take
- Verify the case through the court identified on your papers, not an unsolicited payment message. Ask the court about missing or inconsistent dates.
- Ask the plan lawyer to explain the available response routes and effects for your license type. A correctable violation, an eligible traffic-school request, and a contested ticket require different follow-through.
- Confirm who will file anything, appear, and monitor dates. If the plan provides only advice, request a separate defense quote before assuming a lawyer is handling the case.
California Courts: ticket response options
Three choices that need a closer look
Contesting in writing: eligible infractions may use trial by written declaration, commonly involving form TR-205, evidence, a deadline, and usually a bail deposit. Ask which procedure your court uses. The court guide warns that MyCitations online-trial courts do not offer a new trial afterward, even for a paper submission; do not assume every written process has the same review rights.
Written-declaration eligibility, steps, and review limits
Traffic school: qualifying completion can keep a conviction point confidential for eligible noncommercial drivers. It is not dismissal, and court charges and school tuition remain separate. Ask the court about your license, violation, prior school use, request date, and completion deadline; do not assume a guaranteed insurance saving.
California traffic-school eligibility and costs
Difficulty paying: fine reduction addresses affordability, not whether you committed the violation. The MyCitations guide explains that the request involves a plea and closes off later correction or contesting of that ticket. If traffic school matters to you, check how to request it before taking the fine-reduction route.
MyCitations: relief options and consequences to check first

What may happen next
For example, an included consultation may help you understand school eligibility, but it does not itself enroll you or submit proof. Get the court's confirmation of the chosen route and keep receipts, filings, and completion records. Ask the lawyer what remains your responsibility.
Documents to gather
The full citation and notices, license class, any prior traffic-school dates, relevant photographs or correction records, and the plan's effective date and benefit terms.

Which court and process?
Statewide guidance does not replace the named court's submission method, eligibility decision, or deadline. Tell the lawyer if you hold a commercial license or were driving for work; a routine personal-plan benefit may not fit.

Where prepaid help may fit
Does this exact ticket qualify, in this state, under my effective coverage? Is consultation or court defense included?
What it may not cover
Commercial driving, serious offenses, pre-existing tickets, out-of-state work, fines, court costs, and extra legal work need separate checks.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Will buying a plan after the ticket cover its defense?
Do not assume so. Ask about effective dates, existing-ticket exclusions, eligible violations, and the distinction between consultation and representation. Keep the court deadline even if coverage has not been decided.
Does a covered lawyer mean the ticket costs disappear?
No. Confirm attorney work separately from fines, bail deposits, court charges, school tuition, and any additional legal fees. No plan can promise dismissal, school eligibility, or unchanged insurance rates.

My license may be suspended
Practical starting guidance, not a complete California legal procedure.
What to do first
Read the DMV notice, including the reason, effective date, and hearing instructions. Identify whether it concerns your driving privilege, vehicle registration, or both. Keep the envelope and the date you received it.
Deadlines and urgent risks
A DMV administrative case is separate from court. Hearing requests can be due within days; different actions have different rules. Do not wait for a court date or plan approval, and do not assume paying a fee makes driving lawful.
Steps to take
- Use the DMV suspension directory to identify the type of action, then follow the individual notice. Registration and driver-license issues are not the same process.
- If you want review, promptly check the correct contact and request deadline. The Driver Safety hearing guide describes administrative hearings; DUI administrative-per-se cases have a separate short-deadline explanation. Do not apply one notice's deadline to every suspension.
- Ask whether your prepaid benefit covers this DMV matter, not just the ticket or court appearance. Confirm a lawyer has accepted the hearing work and who will request it.
What may happen next
You may have a DMV hearing, a court case, and later compliance or reissue requirements. Resolving one does not automatically resolve the others. Ask DMV how to verify current driving privileges and any conditions rather than treating a payment receipt as clearance.
For example, a lawyer may defend a covered citation while a separate DMV deadline still runs. Have both matters and dates written into the agreed scope if the lawyer is taking both.
Documents to gather
Every page of the DMV notice and envelope, court papers, license class, prior orders, proof of compliance, and the plan's response. Include any separate hearing-request confirmation.
Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.
Which rules apply?
The agency action and your notice determine the administrative route. DUI, commercial driving, medical-review issues, and criminal allegations may call for different expertise from routine ticket defense.
DMV sources checked October 15, 2026. This page does not calculate your hearing deadline or determine whether you may drive.
Where prepaid help may fit
Does the plan cover advice or representation for this licensing matter?
What it may not cover
Administrative hearings, serious driving cases, reinstatement fees, and required courses may not be covered.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Does ticket-defense coverage include a DMV hearing?
Not automatically. Ask about this particular administrative action, any serious-offense exclusion, and representation fees. A referral or consultation is not confirmation that a hearing request has been made.
If the court case ends, can I drive again?
Do not assume so. DMV may have separate requirements or restrictions. Check your current privilege and the steps for your action directly with DMV; the plan lawyer can help explain the separate issues if that advice is covered.

I was arrested or charged
Practical starting guidance, not a complete California legal procedure.
What to do first
Read the release conditions and next court date. Ask the court or counsel about representation and appointed-counsel eligibility.
Deadlines and urgent risks
Do not miss a hearing or assume a routine traffic benefit covers criminal defense. Avoid posting facts about the case online.
Find defense help, not just a ticket benefit
Ask the court or local public defender about appointed-counsel eligibility if you cannot afford a defense lawyer. That is a different route from civil legal aid, and it is not a promise of appointed counsel for an ordinary traffic infraction.
California Courts: free or low-cost help, including criminal defense
If you have a plan, ask whether this exact charge has an advice, referral, or defense benefit. Confirm exclusions, fees, and an accepted engagement. Do not delay seeking defense help while a new subscription is considered.
What may happen next
At arraignment the court addresses the charges and rights, including counsel. Release conditions, later hearings, and a separate DMV action need their own attention. Tell defense counsel about license, work, or immigration concerns that may require additional expertise.
What California Courts explains about arraignment

Charging and release papers, hearing notice, existing orders, any DMV notice, and your lawyer's contact details. Share case facts through counsel's appropriate private channel, not public posts.

Scope of this page
This section helps you find a defense route and check plan limits. It does not advise on pleas, evidence, release conditions, or a defense strategy.
Court sources checked October 15, 2026. Follow the court named on your papers and obtain individual legal help.
Where prepaid help may fit
Does this exact charge have any benefit, and can the plan connect me with a qualified defense lawyer?
What it may not cover
Most general consultation promises do not establish criminal representation. Confirm exclusions and a separate written engagement if needed.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Is a plan's lawyer referral the same as representation?
No. Verify who has accepted the case, what hearings and work are included, and the fees. A general consultation or referral does not establish that someone will appear for you.
Will the court provide a lawyer for every ticket?
No. Appointed-counsel questions depend on the criminal case and eligibility, not simply difficulty paying a traffic fine. Ask the court or public defender about your situation; use the ticket section for the separate fine-relief route.

California ticket, DMV, and defense resources
County or court details: Use the court named on your papers. Ask about local forms, filing, service, fees, response dates, and hearings. A statewide form may need local additions.
Find local civil legal aid. Eligibility, scope, and availability vary; applying does not establish representation or stop a deadline.
These agencies and directories serve different purposes. Court staff explain procedure, not individualized advice. Civil legal aid is not the usual source of criminal defense.
