I received an eviction notice

Practical starting guidance, not a complete Oregon legal procedure.

What to do first

Keep every page of the notice and envelope. Identify whether it is a landlord notice, a filed court case, or an order, and contact local tenant legal help promptly.

Oregon Judicial Department Self-Help Center · Find local civil legal aid

Deadlines and urgent risks

A landlord notice and a court summons are not the same. The response date, hearing, and available defenses depend on the document and location; this page does not calculate your deadline.

Steps to take

Contact the court named on filed papers to confirm the case and next step. Ask tenant legal aid or a lawyer to review the notice, service, rental history, and any response required.

What may happen next

Depending on the stage, you may need to respond, negotiate, attend a hearing, or seek other relief. An aid application does not stop a deadline.

Documents to gather

Notice, envelope, summons, lease, rent ledger, receipts, messages, repair requests, and any assistance applications.

Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.

Which rules apply?

Statewide law, local court procedure, and federal or agency rules are different checks. Where a local rule matters, use the county and court identified on your documents.

Where prepaid help may fit

Can an existing plan lawyer review this notice today, and is tenant advice or eviction defense included?

What it may not cover

Buying a plan after the problem starts may not cover it. A letter or consultation is not court representation and does not postpone eviction.

Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs

Common questions

Can I buy a plan now for this problem?

Ask about effective dates, waiting periods, and existing-matter exclusions before paying. Do not assume a new subscription covers an issue that has already started.

Does a consultation mean I have a lawyer for the next step?

No. Confirm the scope, who will handle any filing or appearance, responsibility for deadlines, and additional fees. Get a separate engagement if required.

My landlord will not make repairs

Practical starting guidance, not a complete Oregon legal procedure.

What to do first

Record the problem, dates, and any immediate safety concern. Preserve repair requests and replies.

Deadlines and urgent risks

Do not assume another state's rent-withholding or repair-and-deduct rule applies. Withholding money without local advice can create additional risks.

Steps to take

Review the lease and ask local tenant help about the required notice and lawful next steps. For an immediate hazard, contact the appropriate local emergency or inspection service.

What may happen next

The next step may be a written request, inspection, negotiation, or legal process. Local codes and state remedies are not interchangeable.

Documents to gather

Lease, photos, dated requests, replies, inspection records, and any repair expenses.

Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.

I have a problem with my deposit

Practical starting guidance, not a complete Oregon legal procedure.

What to do first

Keep the move-out date, forwarding-address notice, refund or deduction statement, and condition evidence together.

Deadlines and urgent risks

Refund and itemization rules have exceptions. The researched state point below is not a calculation of your claim or a guarantee of recovery.

Steps to take

Compare deductions with the lease and evidence. Ask for supporting records. Get advice about a written demand and whether a small-claims process fits.

From our Oregon research

Previously reviewed state point. Check the linked source and current instructions; exceptions and local procedure still matter.

Rental deposits

Generally 31 days after tenancy ends and you deliver possession.

The landlord must separately account for security deposits and prepaid rent, and return the balance. Prepaid rent can cover unpaid rent, not damage repairs; ordinary wear is excluded from damage deductions. Abandoned tenant-owned manufactured dwellings or floating homes have a special timing rule. Document the tenancy's end and possession return, and ask a lawyer which kind of payment was withheld.

Oregon ORS 90.300: deposits, prepaid rent and exceptions

Ask your prepaid planAsk whether lease review or help responding to a deduction notice is covered. Confirm whether tenant work, landlord work, and representation have different limits.

What may happen next

You may resolve the dispute by correspondence or need a claim. Winning a judgment and collecting it are separate steps.

Documents to gather

Lease, deposit receipt, dated move-in/out photos, forwarding-address notice, deductions, estimates, and receipts.

I am facing foreclosure

Practical starting guidance, not a complete Oregon legal procedure.

What to do first

Gather the mortgage and every notice. Contact a HUD-approved housing counselor and legal help promptly.

Find HUD housing-counseling information

Deadlines and urgent risks

Foreclosure notices and sale dates are time-sensitive. Avoid anyone promising a guaranteed rescue or telling you to ignore your lender or court papers.

Steps to take

Ask the counselor about available options and ask a lawyer about the specific notice, process, and deadlines. Keep copies of assistance requests and replies.

What may happen next

Options depend on the loan, timing, and process. Applying for assistance does not necessarily pause a sale or case.

Documents to gather

Mortgage, notices, court papers, payment history, income information, and assistance correspondence.

I need to understand my lease

Practical starting guidance, not a complete Oregon legal procedure.

What to do first

Mark the terms you do not understand before signing, renewing, or responding to a proposed change.

Deadlines and urgent risks

A sample lease explanation does not establish that a term is enforceable in your state or locality.

Steps to take

Ask for advice on fees, deposits, repairs, renewal, early termination, roommates, and guarantees. Compare the written lease with what was promised.

What may happen next

You may be able to clarify or negotiate a term before committing. Existing obligations need individual review.

Documents to gather

Complete lease, attachments, fee schedule, renewal notice, and relevant messages.

Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.

State court and legal-help directory

County or court details: Use the court named on your papers. Ask about local forms, filing, service, fees, response dates, and hearings. A statewide form may need local additions.

Find local civil legal aid. Eligibility, scope, and availability vary; applying does not establish representation or stop a deadline.

Federal and national resources

These agencies and directories serve different purposes. Court staff explain procedure, not individualized advice. Civil legal aid is not the usual source of criminal defense.
