Traffic tickets & license help
Legal help in Pennsylvania
Before paying a ticket, separate the court case from any effect on your driving privilege. An eligible prepaid traffic benefit may help with advice or defense. Fines, other costs, and PennDOT requirements still need a separate check.
Compare researched state traffic procedures
Court-payment, citation-response, and PennDOT source routes checked October 15, 2026. Criminal charges have a separate lawyer-finding route below, not a full criminal-defense guide. Philadelphia and other local courts can use different procedures.

I just received a traffic ticket
Practical starting guidance, not a complete Pennsylvania legal procedure.
What to do first
Read both sides of the citation. Identify the court, response instructions, deadline, and any required appearance. Send a complete copy to your existing plan if you want a benefit checked.
Do not wait for the plan's answer
For citations under the Magisterial District Court summary procedure, Rule 407 requires a guilty or not-guilty response within 10 days after issuance. A plan inquiry does not extend that time. Confirm the procedure on your actual papers, particularly in Philadelphia.
Pennsylvania criminal procedure Rule 407.
Three checks before choosing a response
- The court: verify the citation number and where to send a plea, request a hearing, or ask about an appearance. A payment portal does not explain your defense options.
- The driving record: ask a lawyer about the specific charge, points, and licensing consequences. Flag a commercial license, existing points, or an out-of-state license immediately. A lower payment is not necessarily a better legal outcome.
- The benefit: ask whether this ticket qualifies under the effective plan, who is assigned, and whether advice or an actual court appearance is included. If it is excluded, request a direct-attorney quote for the same task.
PAePay is payment, not ticket defense
The court's PAePay instructions say paying a traffic citation online requires a guilty plea. Paying an existing court fine or payment plan after a decision is a different transaction. Case eligibility and payment processing depend on the court, which also handles due-date questions.
Before using the checkout screen, ask: am I entering a plea or paying an existing order? Do not assume that sending money is a neutral way to hold your options open.

Philadelphia has its own traffic route
If the citation belongs to Philadelphia Municipal Court's Traffic Division, use the city's traffic-ticket response instructions, not another county's district-court packet. Parking and camera tickets can use different processes too; read the issuing agency on the notice.
This is a local distinction, not a statement that Philadelphia's procedures apply statewide.
Have these ready
- The full citation, envelope or notice, and court correspondence.
- License type and state, any PennDOT notices, and the relevant driving record.
- Photos or records that can be gathered lawfully and safely.
- Membership effective date and written traffic-benefit terms.
Share private records with your lawyer, not this site's search.
What you may still pay
Ask separately about fines, court costs, required deposits, record fees, licensing charges, and any uncovered lawyer work. A prepaid attorney benefit does not mean the total bill disappears.
What happens next?
The next step depends on your plea and the court's instructions. Keep proof of anything sent or filed and confirm hearing arrangements. Do not assume an online course, a lawyer referral, or a call to the clerk guarantees dismissal or stops a deadline.

Where prepaid help may fit
Does this exact ticket qualify, in this state, under my effective coverage? Is consultation or court defense included?
What it may not cover
Commercial driving, serious offenses, pre-existing tickets, out-of-state work, fines, court costs, and extra legal work need separate checks.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Can I enroll today and use the plan for this ticket?
Do not assume a ticket already issued is eligible. Ask about effective coverage, waiting periods, and existing-matter rules. If coverage is unavailable, compare the cost of direct advice without delaying your court response.
Will a lawyer guarantee no points or insurance increase?
No outcome is guaranteed. Ask about the specific charge and record consequences, and do not confuse a plan's representation benefit with a promise about the court, PennDOT, or your insurer.

My license may be suspended
Practical starting guidance, not a complete Pennsylvania legal procedure.
What to do first
Read the notice and identify whether the issue is from a court, licensing agency, or both.
Deadlines and urgent risks
A licensing hearing and a criminal or traffic case may have separate deadlines. Do not assume paying a fine restores driving privileges.
Separate a challenge from restoration
- Want to challenge the action? Give the notice and its mailing date to a Pennsylvania lawyer promptly. Ask about the correct court or agency route, deadline, and whether any request affects when the action starts. Do not assume applying for restoration preserves appeal rights.
- Need to restore the privilege? Obtain PennDOT's free, individualized restoration requirements letter. It lists what your record requires; a general web checklist may miss a condition.
- Have a ticket or unpaid court obligation too? Contact the court about that case and PennDOT about licensing requirements. Completing one task is not confirmation that both records are resolved.
The date alone is not the whole answer
If a suspension period appears to have ended, check the restoration requirements and your actual status before driving. PennDOT's process may require more than paying a fee. Save or print the restoration letter and keep proof of completed requirements.

Need to drive for work?
PennDOT describes occupational, ignition-interlock, and probationary license routes with different eligibility rules. Ask which, if any, fits your record; needing transportation does not itself authorize driving.

Bring to the lawyer
- The notice, envelope, mailing and effective dates.
- Court orders, driving record, and restoration letter.
- Receipts and evidence of completed requirements.
- License class, work-driving needs, and any out-of-state record.
Do not enter license numbers or private case details into this site's search.
Ask the plan a different question
A ticket-defense benefit may not include a PennDOT appeal or administrative work. Ask about those tasks by name, the lawyer's responsibility for the deadline, and a separate fee quote if needed.
Where prepaid help may fit
Does the plan cover advice or representation for this licensing matter?
What it may not cover
Administrative hearings, serious driving cases, reinstatement fees, and required courses may not be covered.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Does paying my ticket restore my license?
Do not assume it does. Court obligations and PennDOT requirements can be separate. Use the individualized restoration letter and confirm your status with PennDOT before driving.
Does the plan handle a suspension appeal?
Ask specifically. A consultation or traffic-court benefit is not necessarily a licensing-appeal benefit. Get confirmation of eligibility, scope, representation, deadline responsibility, and extra costs.

I was arrested or charged
How to find appropriate counsel, not a criminal-defense strategy or a complete account of court procedure.
What to do first
Read the release conditions and next court date. Ask the court or counsel about representation and appointed-counsel eligibility.
Deadlines and urgent risks
Do not miss a hearing or assume a routine traffic benefit covers criminal defense. Avoid posting facts about the case online.
Find the defense route for your county
- If you already have counsel, give them every hearing and release paper promptly. Confirm the next event and any conditions you must follow.
- If you cannot afford counsel, contact the county public defender or ask the court about appointed-counsel eligibility and the application process. The Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network's public-defender directory lists county contacts. Eligibility and the type of case matter; applying does not itself appoint a lawyer.
- If using a plan or private lawyer, ask whether this exact charge and court are covered, not just whether the plan offers legal consultations. Obtain a written engagement for any defense work.
Do not use a routine ticket benefit as a substitute for counsel
DUI, an arrest, or a charge with possible jail consequences needs an explicit criminal-defense coverage check. A referral, consultation, or discount does not mean a lawyer will appear. Avoid posting case facts online and discuss contact with witnesses or the other side with your lawyer.

Documents to gather
Charging and release papers, hearing notice, existing orders, and your lawyer's contact details.
Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.
Which rules apply?
A state criminal case and a federal charge use different courts and defense offices. Confirm which court is named on the papers. Do not send a federal case to a county office without checking the appropriate defense route.
Find county and federal public-defender contact routes
Where prepaid help may fit
Does this exact charge have any benefit, and can the plan connect me with a qualified defense lawyer?
What it may not cover
Most general consultation promises do not establish criminal representation. Confirm exclusions and a separate written engagement if needed.
Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs
Common questions
Does a public-defender application stop my hearing?
Do not assume it changes any hearing or release condition. Confirm whether counsel has been appointed, whom to contact, and what you must do before the next date. Keep the court informed through the proper process.
What if the plan only offers a referral or discount?
Ask the referred attorney whether they can accept the case in time, what work they will handle, and the total quoted fees and expenses. A referral is not an accepted defense engagement.

Court, licensing, and defense routes
County or court details: Use the court named on your papers. Ask about local forms, filing, service, fees, response dates, and hearings. A statewide form may need local additions.
Find local civil legal aid. Eligibility, scope, and availability vary; applying does not establish representation or stop a deadline.
These agencies and directories serve different purposes. Court staff explain procedure, not individualized advice. Civil legal aid is not the usual source of criminal defense.
