Traffic tickets & license help

Legal help in Texas

A prepaid traffic benefit may help with advice or defense for an eligible ticket. Fines, driver-safety courses, license proceedings, and criminal charges are separate coverage checks.

Compare Texas traffic procedures with another state

Source-checked October 15, 2026. Austin is a local example, not a statewide offer. License guidance is limited to starting routes; criminal charges need case-specific defense advice.

I just received a traffic ticket

Source-checked October 15, 2026. Ticket-response starting points and a labeled Austin example, not a plea recommendation.

What to do first

Find the issuing court, response date, and any appearance requirement on the citation. Keep both sides. Contact an existing plan promptly if you want coverage checked before paying or entering a plea; that call does not extend the court's deadline.

Deadlines and urgent risks

Paying can have consequences beyond the fine. A school or dismissal procedure is not available for every driver or violation.

Steps to take

Ask for the work you actually need. Can the plan lawyer review the allegation and record consequences, explain contesting versus an available dismissal route, and handle any included appearance? Confirm acceptance of the matter and who tracks the deadline.

Then check the issuing court's current instructions. Eligibility can depend on the violation, license and commercial-driving status, prior courses, and other conditions. Do not enroll in a course simply because it advertises Texas approval.

Austin Municipal Court: a local example

Source-checked October 15, 2026. Austin procedures do not control another court or establish prepaid coverage.

Available procedure

Austin distinguishes a statute-based driver-safety-course route from discretionary moving-violation deferral, with or without a course. Eligibility and conditions differ. Its current moving-violation deferral explanation is useful for Austin cases, not a promise that your court offers the same option.

Important distinction

Austin's request form includes a guilty or no-contest plea. Its dismissal depends on successfully completing the ordered terms by the due date. Requesting deferral is not contesting the allegation, and submitting a request alone does not complete the case.

Ask the plan lawyer

Can you explain a defense versus a permitted deferral before I enter a plea, review the order's requirements, and handle included court work? Confirm who checks completion and which course, court, and attorney fees I still pay.

Austin Municipal Court deferral (local)

What may happen next

If a court approves a course or deferral, follow the actual order: the permitted course, any driving record, proof of completion, payment, and due dates may be separate tasks. Confirm the court received the required proof and how to check the disposition.

Documents to gather

Citation, driving record if needed, license details, relevant photos, and insurance or other required records.

Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.

Which rules apply?

Texas law and the issuing court's procedures are separate checks. Use the court on the citation, not an Austin form for a different city or county. Ask a lawyer about commercial-driving, out-of-state, or serious-offense issues.

Where prepaid help may fit

An eligible traffic benefit may provide lawyer advice or court defense before you make a costly decision. Ask whether this exact violation, driver, court, and ticket date qualify, and whether the assigned lawyer will appear or only advise.

What it may not cover

Do not assume the plan pays fines, court costs, course fees, or record fees. Existing tickets, commercial driving, serious offenses, and work outside the lawyer's network may be excluded or separately billed. A new membership is not retroactive coverage.

Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs

Common questions

Will buying a plan today cover the ticket I already received?

Not automatically. Ask about effective dates, existing-matter exclusions, and any discounted service that may still be available. Get the scope and full extra cost before paying, and respond to the court on time.

Does finishing an online course dismiss my ticket?

Not on its own. You need the appropriate court approval and must meet the order's conditions, submit required proof, and check the case status. A course provider cannot promise a court outcome for every ticket.

My license may be suspended

Source-checked October 15, 2026. DPS and court starting routes, not a determination that you may drive.

What to do first

Read every DPS and court notice, including the date and method of delivery. Identify the reason for the action and any hearing-request deadline. Keep the envelope and all pages.

Deadlines and urgent risks

A DPS hearing and a criminal case can have separate deadlines. In an Administrative License Revocation matter, the request window can expire before a criminal court date. Follow your particular notice, not a generic deadline or a subscription callback schedule.

Steps to take

Identify the license process. DPS explains that Administrative License Revocation (ALR) is a civil process separate from a DWI/BWI criminal case. Served and mailed notices can involve different request timing. Ask a lawyer to review the actual notice promptly.

For other actions, start with DPS suspensions and reinstatements. A fine receipt or a resolved court case does not itself prove that DPS requirements are satisfied or that the suspension period has ended.

If essential driving is affected: ask whether an occupational driver license could fit. It is restricted, not available in every situation, and does not authorize commercial driving. A court order and DPS issuance are different steps; get advice about any temporary authority, restrictions, and remaining requirements.

What may happen next

You may need a timely hearing request, compliance documents, fees, or a restricted-license process. Ask how to confirm your current driving status before driving. Do not assume an employer's need for you to drive changes the legal restrictions.

Documents to gather

Agency notice, orders, citation, license record, and proof of required payments or compliance.

Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.

Which rules apply?

DPS handles licensing actions; the criminal or traffic court handles its own case. Ask whether separate hearings or engagements are needed. Commercial driving and licenses issued by another state need additional checks.

Where prepaid help may fit

A covered consultation may help identify the DPS action, understand the notice, and plan the next call. Ask specifically about an ALR hearing or occupational-license petition; do not rely on a general traffic-defense description.

What it may not cover

An ordinary ticket benefit may not include a DPS hearing, restricted-license court work, or DWI defense. Reinstatement fees, insurance requirements, and course costs may remain yours. Confirm each proceeding and fee separately.

Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs

Common questions

Does paying the ticket restore my license?

Not necessarily. Court disposition, DPS compliance requirements, fees, and the suspension period can be separate. Confirm current eligibility with DPS and ask a lawyer what remains before driving.

Is the DPS hearing included with my criminal defense?

Do not assume so. ALR is a separate civil process. Ask the lawyer and plan to identify which hearing requests, appearances, and related court petitions are included and who is responsible for each deadline.

I was arrested or charged

Source-checked October 15, 2026. A criminal-defense referral route, not a guide to defending a charge.

What to do first

Read the release conditions and next court date. Ask the court or counsel about representation and appointed-counsel eligibility.

Deadlines and urgent risks

Do not miss a hearing or assume a routine traffic benefit covers criminal defense. Avoid posting facts about the case online.

Steps to take

Contact a qualified criminal-defense lawyer promptly. If you cannot afford one, ask the court how to apply for appointed counsel and what information is needed. The Texas State Law Library's appointed-attorney guide explains eligibility and requesting help; appointment is not automatic.

Follow existing court conditions and ask counsel before contacting witnesses or discussing the facts publicly. If a DWI arrest also led to a DPS notice, point out both proceedings immediately.

What may happen next

Ask who represents you, when to contact them, and what the next court event requires. A routine fine-only ticket and a charge carrying possible jail time have different appointed-counsel considerations. Civil legal aid and a court-appointed defense lawyer are not interchangeable routes.

Documents to gather

Charging and release papers, hearing notice, existing orders, and your lawyer's contact details.

Do not enter documents or private case details into this site's search.

Which rules apply?

Use the criminal court and case number on your papers. The court decides appointed-counsel eligibility; a plan provider or this website cannot make that decision. A separate DPS matter needs separate attention.

Find a lawyer through the Texas State Law Library's referral information

Where prepaid help may fit

An existing plan may offer initial advice or a referral, and some products have specific defense benefits. Identify the exact charge and ask which lawyer is accepting responsibility for the case.

What it may not cover

Do not treat a traffic-ticket or general-consultation benefit as criminal representation. Serious offenses, DWI, bail-related work, trial, and appeals need explicit confirmation. Ask for a written engagement and fees for anything outside the benefit.

Ask for the written coverage terms · Compare the actual extra costs

Common questions

Will the court assign a lawyer automatically?

No. Ask how to apply and provide the required financial information. Eligibility depends on the proceeding and applicable rules; routine fine-only traffic cases are not the same as charges carrying possible jail time.

Does a plan referral mean the lawyer handles my case?

No. Confirm that the lawyer accepts the matter, what work is included, and who handles the next hearing. A referral, benefit inquiry, or appointment request does not cancel a court date.

State court and legal-help directory

County or court details: Use the court named on your papers. Ask about local forms, filing, service, fees, response dates, and hearings. A statewide form may need local additions.

Find local civil legal aid. Eligibility, scope, and availability vary; applying does not establish representation or stop a deadline.

These agencies and directories serve different purposes. Court staff explain procedure, not individualized advice. Civil legal aid is not the usual source of criminal defense.
